McGraw-Hill’s IELTS 5 Practice Tests

McGraw-Hill’s IELTS is a study book for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. It consists of model questions and practice tests to help you prepare for the actual exam.

Summary Of The Book

The IELTS is an English language qualification test jointly managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the British Council, and IDP Education Pty Ltd that is accepted for admissions by numerous universities worldwide. It has 4 sections which are Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The speaking section is a live interview with an examiner and is usually recorded if the need for re-examination arises. The test is 2 hours and 45 minutes long and is scored on a scale of 0 to 9.

McGraw-Hill’s IELTS begins with an introduction to what the IELTS is and the 4 aspects of the language on which students are tested. The 2nd part of the book deals with the 4 sections individually and consists of practice questions for each. The CD that comes with the book is for the listening and speaking sections.

The listening section consists of 4 subsections, each with one dialogue or monologue that test-takers are to listen to and answer questions that follow. The speaking section has 3 subsections. In the first, the test-taker is asked to talk about personal interests. Test-takers are expected to speak on a given topic in the next subsection. The third involves a discussion with the examiner on the topic of the last subsection. The CD contains tracks for both sections and these can be followed with the transcripts of the tracks in the book.

The reading section in the exam consists of 3 passages that need to be read, following which a set of 13 to 14 questions need to be answered based on the passage. The book provides multiple choice questions, sentence completion exercises, short and long answers questions, classifications, matching, and synonyms and antonyms of the kind seen in the exam.

The writing section in the exam consists of describing graphical data like charts and diagrams, responding to arguments and an essay writing subsection. To prepare for the writing section, the book carries sample essays for study. These essays are scored so students know what is required for a high-scoring essay. Practice topics are provided at the end of this section.

Each section is also given a time limit within which students are expected to finish answering questions. In addition, the book contains a section on the sort of vocabulary and grammar that is likely to appear in the exam. McGraw-Hill’s IELTS gives 5 full length practice tests to familiarize students with the length and duration of the exam. Solutions are given for all the exercises at the end for reference.
