The Differences between IBT TOEFL and IELTS

Let’s talk about the differences between the IBT TOEFL and the IELTS.

 FORMAT:

The IBT TOEFL is a Computer test. The IELTS can be a paper or computer test, it has two formats. The IELTS Academic and IELTS General TrainingObjectives: Both tests are required by institutions for admission purposes. IBT TOEFL for institutions in The USA and Canada mainly and IELTS for institutions in the United Kingdom, Australia, India and Canada mainly. The IELTS General Training Test is required for immigration purposes.
MAIN DIFERENCE: The IBT TOEFL Test is basically multiple choice whereas the IESTS is a context based test. In my opinion due to this the IBT TOEFL test is easier. Both tests have 4 sections. The most important skill for the IBT TOEFL is listening since u will need it in 3 different sections.


READING SECTION:

On the IBT TOEFL test you may have 69 to 70 questions or 43 tp 44 questions and lasts from 60 to 80 minutes (3 or 4 texts). On The IELTS Academic u have 3 sections each with one academic text with a total of 40 questions and lasts 60 minutes. On the IELTS General Training u have 3 sections. The first two are trivial text and u have two texts per section. On section 3 u have one academic text with a total of 40 question and lasts 60 minutes

LISTENING SECTION:

On the IBT TOEFL 34 or 52 questions (6 to 9 lectures and conversations) and lasts between 60 to 80 minutes. On The IELTS u have 40 questions divided in 4 sections which last around 4o minutes. The listening in the IELTS is the same for both Academic and General Training.
SPEAKING SECTION: On The TOEFL u have 6 questions. 4 independent ones and 4 integrated; On the integrated tasks u will b asked to report on readings and listening y u will hear. On the IELTS u have an interview which is divided in 3 sections. Section 1 personal questions. Section 2 a description section 3 follow up questions related to the topic of the description

WRITING SECTION:

Both tests have 2 tasks.
On the IBT TOEFL Task 1 is an integrated task. U will read a text and afterward listen to something related to it. U will have to report what u read and heard. Task 2 Write an essay
On the IELTS Academic. Task 1 describe a graph. Task 2 Write an essay
On the IELTS General Training; Task 1 Write a letter. Task 2 Write an essay
Y will have for both tasks on both tests 60 minutes
Obs. – In August the IBT TOEFL will have some changes.
